What Is ‘Comic-Con’?

The MCM Comic Con is back at ExCel London on 26th to 28th May! But do you know what Comic-Con is? Put simply, it’s a ‘comic book convention’ where fans come together to attend panel discussions by industry creators and experts as well as meet other like- minded fans and they are held in huge venues (often over a weekend) and attract thousands of visitors.

Why Are They So Popular?

The first official ‘Comic-Con’ was held back in 1964 in New York City and by today’s standards a fairly small event. Since then, science fiction and ‘nerd/geek’ culture has become more mainstream and integrated into popular culture – in general, society has become more aware and welcoming of individuality and diverse interests. With the growth of social media and online corporations like Netflix and Amazon these comics, characters and films are far more accessible to a wider global audience – consider the huge popularity of blockbuster film franchises such as the MCU!(Marvel Cinematic Universe)

What Can You Do and See at MCM Comic-Con London?

There’s so much to see and do at MCM Comic-Con! There’s the chance to meet and have photos taken with special guests or attend a panel discussion with your favourite stars. If shopping is more your thing, there are loads of stands exhibiting and selling ‘merch’ (branded merchandise), comics, games and art supplies. ‘Cosplay’ (costume play) is actively encouraged and a huge part of any Comic-Con and there’s even a dedicated area holding masquerades, costume/wig workshops and a costume hospital (just in case you experience a costume emergency!) For K-Pop, J-Pop, Manga and Anime fans ‘Pop-Asia’ is your destination for origami and Manga drawing workshops or if you simply want to learn the dance moves from your favourite K-Pop song.
